Biography: Louisa Matilda Gunthorpe was born in 1814 in Bridgwater, the daughter of wine merchant William Henry Holloway. She lived most of her life in Bradford. In 1846, she married surgeon George Henry Gunthorpe but the marriage was childless. Her husband died in 1861 in Kensington. Thereafter Gunthorpe lived in Bradford with her stepmother and step-sister. In the 1870s, she began contributing stories to magazines including the New Monthly Magazine and she wrote a sensational novel Marcia (1879). She died on 16 April 1898 in Bradford.
