Author: Charles Ede (1823–1912)

Biography: Charles Ede was born on 5 August 1823 in London, the son of Joseph Ede and his wife Lydia. His father worked as a clerk in the Audit Office. Ede was apprenticed to a surgeon and entered the Royal Navy in 1845. He was appointed surgeon and naturalist to the HMS Assistance which took part in the search for the doomed Franklin expedition. When Ede returned to England in 1851, he married Emma Ede and settled in Bramley, Surrey where he practiced as a surgeon. The couple had twelve children. Based on his arctic adventures, he wrote the single novel for young adults, Warm Hearts in Cold Regions (1862). In additon, he contributed poetry to many periodicals. He died on 25 August 1912 in Bramley.
