Biography: Elizabeth Jane Ensell was born on 30 January 1823 in Limerick, the daughter of Richard Standish. In her twenties, she began writing fiction beginning with Emma Clifford (1850) under her maiden name. She married clergyman Charles Holt Ensell in 1862 and the couple had a son. They moved to England where her husband served as vicar in Erpingham and Wareham. Ensell continued to periodically produce novels unitl the end of the century. Her husband suffered from mental illness in his last years before his death in 1903. She died on 17 September 1914 in Netley.
