Author: John Christopher Atkinson (1816–1900)

Biography: John Christopher Atkinson was born in May 1816 in Goldhanger, Essex, the son of clergyman John Atkinson. He attended Kelvedon School and St. John's College, Cambridge (B.A. 1838). He was ordained and worked as a schoolmaster before becoming the vicar of Danby in Cleveland, Yorkshire. A memoir late in life chronicles his low pay and travails in the rural parish where by his own estimates he walked some 70,000 miles doing his rounds. To supplement his income, he wrote many historical and antiquarian works as well as a few novels for boys. The University of Durham granted him an honorary LL.D., the Archbishop of York named him a canon, and the government granted him a civil list pension in 1898. He married three times and had fourteen children. Atkinson died on 31 March 1900 in Danby.
