Biography: John Fawcett was born on 23 March 1802 in Bombay (now Mumbai), the son of Henry Fawcett and his wife Helen (née Hutchins). Fawcett served in the Bombay army retiring at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. In the 1850s, he was instrumental in the incorporation of Brighton and served as the city's first mayor. He moved to Jersey in the next decade. During his latter years, he wrote a single novel. He died on 23 March 1878 in St. Helier.
