Author: Charles Fleet (1816–1909)

Biography: Charles Fleet was born on 22 April 1816 in Brighton, the son of the owner of the Brighton Herald. He followed his father into journalism and passed through all the stages of reporter, editor, and proprietor. In his long career he witnessed the growth of Brighton and was a fixture in the life of his hometown. He retired in 1880 and devoted himself to writing histories of his native town and memoirs of his life. His wife predeceased him and he died on 27 March 1909 in Brighton.
