Biography: George S. Phillips was born in 1816 in Peterborough. He attended Cambridge before emigrating to New York to work as a journalist. He returned to England to edit the Leeds Times and later became the principal of the People's College in Huddersfield. In 1840, he married Charlotte Kemp (who later published a novel) and the couple had one son. In the 1850s, it appears he returned to America. Phillips wrote several works of fiction, often under the pseudonym "January Searle" but little made it back to his native country. Sadly, he was institutionalized in a New Jersey asylum in 1873. He died on 14 January 1889 in New Jersey.
