Biography: Charlotte Phillips was born in 1818 in St. Neots, the daughter of Robert Kemp of Simpson's Bank, Peterborough. In 1840, she married author George Searle Phillips and the couple had one son. In addition to a collection of poems, she wrote a novel Ten Years in a Lunatic Asylum (1868) under the pseudonym "Mabel Etchell" based on her own experiences in an asylum. Following her husband's career, she lived for a time in the United States where her husband was committed in 1873. She died in 1876.
