Author: Richard Baxter Townshend (1846–1923)

Biography: Richard Baxter Townshend was born in 1846 in Co. Cork, the son of clergyman Chambre Corker Townshend of Derry. Townshend attended Cambridge where he earned an M. A. Then he went to Colorado and Texas where he owned a ranch. A few years later, he returned to Oxford earning another M. A. and becoming master of Bath College. In 1881, he married novelist Dorothea Townshend. In addition to academic works, Townshend wrote a novel Lone Pine (1899) set in America. Notably, he was a friend of composer Elgar who dedicated one of the Enigma Variations to Townshend. He died in 1923 in Oxford.
