Author: George S. Jealous (1833–1896)
Biography: George Samuel Jealous was born on 25 March 1833 in London, the son of dock labourer Thomas Jealous. His later obituary stated he came from an old Lincolnshire family. At an early age he was apprenticed to a printer and quickly rose to partner before striking out on his own. His interest in co-operative enterprises brought him trouble and his own business was ruined as a result. In 1862, he bought the fledgling newspaper Hampstead and Highgate Express and brought it to prominence over the next thirty years under his editorship. He wrote the single work of fiction, a collection of juvenile stories. Jealous became a fixture of Hampstead life, taking an interest in education for the poor and temperance. He married but the marriage was childless. He died after a long, painful decline on 19 September 1896 in Hampstead.
